Mountain biking is also a popular choice (as well as walking and 4WD) for getting into Big River, you can bike either bike along the 4WD road from Reefton and then return the same way (50km return - Grade 3) taking between 4-8 hours. The other option is to bike along the Big River tramping track to Waiuta (12km - Grade 4) which is slightly more challenging. From Waiuta down to SH7 is a gravel road (10km) then along the SH back to Reefton (27km). Allow 2-4 hours to get to Big River and then another couple of hours back to Reefton. This loop can be done as in a day or as a two of three day trip. Big River has a DOC hut at it and the lodge at Waiuta can be booked through the Reefton i-SITE Visitor Centre.
This track is rated by many as one of the most enjoyable hardcore rides in the country. Allow 4-6 hours (20km return - Grade 5) to bike up and then down. Or catch a helicopter up and just do the downhill (lasts for about an hour for those experienced riders! Allow longer if your not so speedy!). Kirwans Hill has a DOC hut on it so overnighting is an option too.
Allow an hour (Grade 2) from Reefton you had bike one KM down SH7 turn up Soliders Road and take the old forestry roads up to the look out point and then down the 'Zig Zag' arriving back in Rosstown two minutes ride from Reefton.
Waitahu Valley/Murray Creek (Black's Point)
This track has two opitions, you can stay on the Murray Creek track doing a loop starting and finishing in Blacks Point (2km East of Reefton) or half way up the Murray Creek track head down into the Waitahu Valley (Grade 3+ and 27km starting and finishing in Reefton) this river is now bridged and the final 8km is road riding back to town.
