Historic Blackwater School

Have a day out visiting the long deserted mining ghost town of Waiuta and nearby historic Blackwater School.

In the settlement of Blackwater on the way to Waiuta, a well-known mining ghost town on New Zealand’s West Coast, you’ll find the historic Blackwater School. The single classroom school was built in 1913 and closed in 1949 when the roll slipped to five students.

Now, the schoolhouse is open to the public where you can see the original desks, inkwells, memorabilia and photographs. Donations are encouraged to help maintaining this historic gem.
