Want to explore further? Reefton is often called the ‘Gateway to the Coast’ – from here you can adventure into the Buller district and the wider West Coast.

There are hundreds of incredible hidden (and not so hidden) gems across Buller, the northernmost end of the indescribably beautiful West Coast. The district butts right up against Golden Bay, with a large chunk of the Kahurangi National Park, sweeping down alongside the Tasman district through the upper Buller Gorge, heading back further inland around to Maruia, through Lewis Pass down below Springs Junction then sort of roughly cutting across to Punakaiki … then the stunning, wild, untamed and diverse coastline all the way up from there, past many settlements each with their own charm and rich heritage, all the way up to the Kahurangi Point Lighthouse in Golden Bay.

Buller spans across Kahurangi National Park, Paparoa National Park, Victoria Forest Park (2,069 square kilometres – New Zealand’s largest forest park), Lewis Pass Scenic Reserve, three of West Coast’s seven Tohu Whenua sites (Denniston Mine, Historic Reefton, Waiuta), and contains two Great Walks; Heaphy Track and Paparoa Track.
