The Strand Recreation Area in Reefton was full of life recently as locals and visitors gathered for the Reefton Strand Slam, a fun-filled day celebrating the town’s upgraded recreation facilities.
The event showcased the area’s new disc golf course, 3×3 basketball court and seating, highlighting the range of free, outdoor activities available for people of all ages to enjoy while visiting or living in Reefton.
Activities on the day included a basketball skills session with former Tall Black and Nelson Giants Assistant Coach Phill Jones, a 3×3 basketball competition, disc golf, garden games, music and face painting. Food and coffee were available throughout the day, and the event wrapped up with a pool party, adding to the relaxed summer atmosphere.
Organised by Sport Tasman in partnership with Reefton Inc, Buller District Council and Reefton Basketball, the event demonstrated how the Strand Recreation Area can be used as a vibrant space for both community gatherings and casual recreation.
Sport Tasman Community Outcomes Advisor for Buller, Tara Papworth, said the day was a great way to celebrate the facilities and encourage people to make the most of them. “It was wonderful to see so many people enjoying the space. The facilities are a great asset for the Reefton community and for visitors looking for something active to do while in town.”
The Strand Recreation Area is open year-round and offers an easy, family-friendly way to stay active, whether you’re passing through Reefton or calling it home.
