A natural adventure playground is right at the doorstep of Reefton

While history is definitely our strong suit, many have left Reefton taking lasting memories of the great adventures they've had against a stunning natural backdrop. PLEASE NOTE THAT KIRWANS - MONTGOMERIE TRACKS ARE CLOSED 4.9.2023

Whether you’re a mild adventurer or an adrenaline-powered thrill-seeker, there’s a huge range of activities for you to enjoy.

Surrounding Reefton is Victoria Conservation Park – an outdoor enthusiast’s dream area – with a network of walking tracks, some dating from the late 1800’s. The 180,000-hectare conservation park is the largest in New Zealand so there’s plenty to explore. Throughout Reefton, there’s a variety of tramping tracks with short and easy trails, longer and more challenging day walks or even moonlight tramp tracks.

For mountain bike enthusiasts, we have cycling tracks that range from Grade 2 for beginners to Grade 5 for those who have built up the strength and endurance to really level up their mountain biking experience. You can choose from short tracks to multi-day ones.

Those who love adventure on the water, have options such as kayaking or rafting or a more relaxed fishing expedition. The town is popular with fishers because of the lake and 12 rivers that flow through the town and provide great trout fishing opportunities. The Reefton Sports Centre hires fishing gear and you can find a few good guides around town to teach you the art of catching trout. Waitahu and Larry’s Creek are popular spots for fishing. Grey River, on the other hand, is more for the water adventurer who can explore pure wilderness on the grade 3 white water rapids.

In Reefton, there’s always an adventure waiting to happen.
