Gold panning

While in Reefton try your hand at gold panning!

There are two options one is self guided at Slab Hut Creek or you can head down to the Bearded Miners where flakes of gold are 'guaranteed' to be found.

If you choose the self guided option pans can be hired at the Reefton Visitor Centre. Pick up a gold panning brochure, some local tips, and then head 10km south to the camping area Slab Hut Creek and try your luck.

Getting Here Reefton is centrally located at the hub of state highway access into the Coast, north from Murchison, Nelson and Blenheim and east from Christchurch.

Our History The town of Reefton was established in 1870 and was immediately a prosperous place. In August 1888, it became the first place in New Zealand to have a public supply of electricity, even before London or New York.
